What is the Blended Learning Initiative?

This program is designed for courses that do not meet the criteria for the President's Technology Initiative. In particular, this program is available for upper-division courses or lower-division courses that have smaller enrollments than the courses targeted by the President's Technology Initiative. Priority consideration will be given to proposals in which all sections of a course will use the blended redesign. However, some consideration may be given to proposals for demonstration projects in which only some sections of the course will use the blended design. These demonstration projects should have the potential to positively affect future course redesign strategies in the department.
Blended learning combines the best elements of face-to-face teaching (for example, oral communication) and online instruction (for example, thoughtful reflection, written communication, and exploration) in ways that improve student engagement and learning. Course redesign is one way departments can allocate scarce resources more efficiently. Multisection courses can benefit especially from sharing resources and consolidating faculty time spent on course design while simultaneously increasing student engagement and success. Another benefit is that the course redesign process often helps departments clarify goals and improve communication and collaboration.
Faculty time or positions freed by the course redesigns will remain with the departments to be applied toward supporting the following kinds of activities:
- Increased faculty-student interaction
- Expanded departmental programming
- Enrollment growth
- Undergraduate research or internships
- Graduate instruction and mentoring
