Eligible courses include Mountain Campus 100- and 200-level, large-enrollment (100+ students per semester), multisection courses taught in person by multiple instructors. Courses taught only online, and in-person courses taught through Extended Campuses, are not eligible. Academic leaders (deans, associate deans, chairs) will collaborate with faculty and administrators to identify courses that will likely benefit the most from a blended-learning approach. Participants in this initiative must make a commitment to sustain, assess, and improve the blended courses over time.
Faculty may submit proposals if they
- Teach at least one in-person section of eligible 100- and 200-level Mountain Campus courses
- Have the support of their department chair and dean
- Complete a workshop on blended learning and proposal preparation
- Sign a course development agreement that gives the university a nonexclusive perpetual license to use the course
- Agree to pilot at least one section of the blended course in Fall 2013*
- Get agreement from all instructors of all in-person sections of the course to teach the blended version of the course no later than Fall 2014*
One faculty member should be the lead course designer, and additional faculty members can serve as co-designers if the chair approves. Faculty teaching assignments for Fall 2013 or Spring 2014 should allow for pilots of blended courses.
*Note: Full funding is available for departments and faculty who meet these criteria. However, partial funding is potentially available for the following situations:
- An individual instructor wants to convert to a blended format, but not all of the other instructors of all sections are willing to convert to a blended format. In this case, the faculty stipend is available, but the recurring departmental supplement is not. All other requirements and deadlines still apply.
- All instructors of all in-person sections agree to convert to a blended format, but the department cannot pilot the course in Fall 2013 or Spring 2014 and thus cannot teach the blended course in all sections by Fall 2014. The department can negotiate a longer time line for submitting a proposal and developing the blended course but agrees to replace all in-person sections with the blended course no later than Spring 2015. In this case, the faculty stipend is available, but the recurring departmental supplement is not. Participants still need to complete the Blended Learning Workshop, which will be offered again at a later date by arrangement with the department. The President has established a Technology Innovation Fund that will pay selected faculty and departments to redesign eligible courses.
Departments will designate one or more faculty members to lead and coordinate the redesign effort across multiple sections of each course. Each lead faculty member is eligible for up to a $6,000 stipend. If two or more faculty members participate in the redesign effort for a single course, the department chair chooses how to allocate the development stipends equitably among the participants.
Departments can apply to redesign more than one course, and a separate faculty stipend is available for each accepted redesign proposal.
Departments that successfully redesign one or more of their courses are eligible for up to a $30,000 recurring supplement to the department's operations funding to support the blended courses after they are rolled out. The size of the department's operations funding supplement depends on the time savings or cost savings realized by the course redesign and will be scaled to the size of the department.

Departments whose proposals are accepted will be notified about the amount of the departmental stipend.

|Fall 2013||Faculty teach pilots of the blended courses||While teaching the pilot courses, faculty keep notes on what works and what doesn't work in the blended courses and then use that information to submit a report on planned refinements to the course.
Course design & materials also undergo a quality review facilitated by the department chair, with feedback and suggestions given to the faculty on possible refinements that could improve the next iteration of the blended course.
Faculty also submit to the department chair a draft of an instructor's guide that makes explicit the decisions made about the course design along with helpful hints and tips for other instructors who will teach the course.
Faculty receive a $2400 stipend after they

See the Evaluation Criteria and the Proposal Template. Proposals that emphasize the "flipped classroom" model of course redesign will receive priority consideration. Other kinds of blended course redesigns will be considered if they will result in as many as possible of the following improvements:
- Improved student learning
- Improved student success evidenced by course completion and retention
- More efficient use of university resources in ways that lead to cost savings or time savings (i.e., lower cost per student)
- Increased capacity to serve students
