Curriculum Coordinator - AIAQTP

Pat Ellsworth

I was trained as a freshwater biologist, with a doctorate from the University of Colorado. I have taught as adjunct faculty at Southern Oregon State University, Prescott College, Yavapai College, and Northern Arizona University (NAU).

My work with Native students began when I served five summers as core faculty and mentor for high school students attending summer science/math programs at NAU. My work with the Institute for Tribal Environmental Professionals (ITEP) began in November 1992. Since then I have served as Curriculum Coordinator for the American Indian Air Quality Training Program (AIAQTP). ITEP is associated with the College of Engineering, Forestry, and Natural Sciences at NAU. The United States Environmental Protection Agency provides funding for the AIAQTP so that training in air quality management is available to tribal staff throughout the U.S.

Sometimes I ask myself "How did I get into this air quality stuff?" Well, career paths can change. I am glad to be working at ITEP and with tribes. I often look at the sky, wondering "How's the air quality today?" and "Is this a good day to be outdoors?"

In "the rest of my life" – our three adult children live in Arizona and Colorado, with their spouses and our six grandchildren. I like to grow native plants and spend time with family.

Welcome to NAU and the beautiful Colorado Plateau!
