Title:
Renewable Energy Projects Not Always Friendly to Tribal Culture
Author:
Bob Gruenig
Date Published:
Description:
Most Indian tribes have been very supportive regarding the construction of renewable energy facilities which typically have a lesser environmental footprint than their fossil fuel facility counterparts. Some in Indian country, however, are beginning to express their concerns about some of the former facilities, largely based on their negative impacts to the sacred lands and practices of tribes. The article discusses some recent renewable energy projects and concerns about their potential impacts and how some of these projects are being fast-tracked for approval, providing Indian tribes with little opportunity to fully examine and comment on the projects. As a result, the sacred lands and practices of many of these tribes could be in danger of long-term survival. 11/1/10.
