Recent studies have documented poor population health outcomes
in coal mining areas of Appalachia compared to other parts of the region or the nation (Hendryx, 2008, 2009; Hendryx and Ahern, 2008; Hendryx et al., 2008). These !ndings include higher chronic cardiovascular disease (CVD) mortality rates (Hendryx, 2009) and higher rates of self-reported CVD (Hendryx and Ahern, 2008).
