Mining waste from the exploration and removal of minerals presents challenges for many tribes. Mineral extraction and benificiation can create environmental problems including acid mine drainage, erosion and sedimentation, chemical releases, fugitive dust emission, habitat destruction, surface- and ground-water contamination, and subsidence.
