Description
- The Adak Naval Air Station Superfund Site is located on Adak Island, AK of the Aleutian Islands. The Island is within the traditional lands of the Aleut peoples. The Aleuts or the Unangan exercise subsistence practices, cultural practices and ceremonial practices on the island. - Of the 76,000 acre site the Aleut Corporation, made up of Alaska Native stakeholders, now holds 47,000 acres through land exchanges with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Services. In 2004, after military shut down the base (2000) 71,171 acres of Adak NAS was transferred to USFWS and then to AK Native stakeholders.
