Drought conditions throughout the past decade, and especially in 2002 followed by a bark beetle outbreak, have lead to high pinyon mortality (~20-80%) throughout Southwestern pinyon-juniper woodlands. This die-off of pinyons, and to a lesser extent junipers, may be viewed as a “thinning” of woodlands to pre-settlement conditions. Preliminary data suggest the highest pinyon mortality occurred in mature trees, but juniper mortality varied throughout the region. While contrary to other studies, woodland density was not a factor in overall tree mortality in this drought. This dataset contains measurements on drought-related mortality made in 2004 in an area located north of the San Francisco Peaks in northern Arizona. Measurements for each transect include: transect label elevation (m) Total number of Juniperus monosperma that are alive in 2004 Total number of Juniperus monosperma that are dead in 2004 Total number of Juniperus monosperma in 2004 Total number of Pinus edulis that are alive in 2004 Total number of Pinus edulis that are dead in 2004 Total number of Pinus edulis in 2004 Total number of Pinus ponderosae in 2004 Total number of juniperus deppeana in 2004 Total number of trees in 2004 Total canopy area (m2) of Juniperus monosperma in 2004 Total canopy area (m2) of Pinus edulis in 2004 Total canopy area (m2) of Pinus ponderosae in 2004 Total canopy area (m2) of Juniperus deppeana in 2004 Total canopy area (m2) of trees in 2004 Total trunk basal area (cm2) of Juniperus monosperma in 2004 Total trunk basal area (cm2) of Pinus edulis in 2004 Total trunk basal area (cm2) of Pinus ponderosae in 2004 Total trunk basal area (cm2) of Juniperus deppeana in 2004 Total trunk basal area (cm2) of trees in 2004 Proportion of Juniperus monosperma dead in 2004 Proportion of Pinus edulis dead in 2004 Proportion of Juniperus monosperma and Pinus edulis dead in 2004 Arcsin (sqrt(Proportion of Juniperus monosperma dead in 2004)) Arcsin (sqrt(Proportion of Pinus edulis dead in 2004)) Arcsin (sqrt(Proportion of Juniperus monosperma and Pinus edulis dead in 2004)) Total number of Juniperus monosperma that are alive in 2004 per 100m2 Total number of Juniperus monosperma that are dead in 2004 per 100m2 Total number of Juniperus monosperma in 2004 per 100m2 Total number of Pinus edulis that are alive in 2004 per 100m2 Total number of Pinus edulis that are dead in 2004 per 100m2 Total number of Pinus edulis in 2004 per 100m2 Total number of Pinus ponderosae in 2004 per 100m2 Total number of juniperus deppeana in 2004 per 100m2 Total number of trees in 2004 per 100m2 Total canopy area (m2) of Juniperus monosperma in 2004 per 100m2 Total canopy area (m2) of Pinus edulis in 2004 per 100m2 Total canopy area (m2) of Pinus ponderosae in 2004 per 100m2 Total canopy area (m2) of Juniperus deppeana in 2004 per 100m2 Total canopy area (m2) of trees in 2004 per 100m2 Total trunk basal area (cm2) of Juniperus monosperma in 2004 per 100m2 Total trunk basal area (cm2) of Pinus edulis in 2004 per 100m2 Total trunk basal area (cm2) of Pinus ponderosae in 2004 per 100m2 Total trunk basal area (cm2) of Juniperus deppeana in 2004 per 100m2 Total trunk basal area (cm2) of trees in 2004 per 100m2 For more information on this dataset and for use permissions, please contact Michael Clifford at mjc235@nau.edu
