Teacher Education Program Application

GOAL I –PREPARE 45 RURAL PARAPROFESSIONALS (3 COHORTS OF 15 FOR 5 SEMESTERS EACH) TO BECOME TEACHERS WHO WILL IMPROVE INSTRUCTION FOR LEP STUDENTS & LEP STUDENTS WITH DISABILITIES VIA COURSEWORK FOR B.S. DEGREE IN ELEMENTARY (K-8) & SPECIAL EDUCATION (K-12), ESL/SEI ENDORSEMENT (K-12), TOT PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT, PROFESSIONAL CONFERENCE & MENTOR TEACHERS.

GOAL II- IMPROVE NAU TEACHER EDUCATION PROGRAM TO BETTER PREPARE ALL TEACHERS TO PROVIDE EFFECTIVE INSTRUCTION FOR LEP STUDENTS & LEP STUDENTS WITH DISABILITIES VIA FACULTY ELL STRATEGIES TRAINING AND REDESIGNING ELEMENTARY & SPECIAL EDUCATION SYLLABI WITH LEP MODULES.

GOAL III - COLLECT POST TRAINING DATA ON EFFECTIVENESS OF GRADUATES WITH ACHIEVEMENT OF LEP STUDENTS.

Objectives of the PRISE Program:
• Three cohorts (15 students x 3 = 45 total) of pre-service teachers (paraprofessionals) will complete 71 credit hour program which aligns fully with AZ State Standards consisting of all coursework (22 courses plus practica) for a Bachelors Degree with a Dual Major in Elementary Education and Special Education and ESL/SEI endorsement.
• NAU faculty participate in training on ELL strategies for teaching LEP & LEP students with disabilities.
• Teacher education faculty redesign syllabi to include new strategies in LEP Modules, pilot new syllabi in PRISE program, implement syllabi with all teacher education students, and assess outcomes of redesigned syllabi in improving instruction for LEP students.
• Post training data will be collected on graduates’ effectiveness in improving achievement and English language development of ELL students.
