Alaska Indoor Air Quality:
Indoor air quality (IAQ) is a critical issue facing all environmental programs throughout Indian Country. However, with
the extreme climate conditions in Alaska, students are more likely to spend the entire school day indoors. In addition
to the after school activities such as sports and daycare, schools in rural Alaska are often gathering places for
community activities in the evening. Schools are a good starting place for a community indoor air quality program.
The health and comfort of students and teachers are among the many factors that contribute to learning and productivity
in the classroom, which in turn affect academic performance and achievement. Good indoor air quality, including proper
ventilation, leads to a better learning environment. Working with educators and students to gain a better understanding
of air quality and to improve the indoor air quality in school buildings will also help increase awareness of indoor
air quality throughout the community.
